PROMPT:
As compared to the past, children these days spend more of their leisure time indoors with computers and TV and less time outdoors. Describe some of the problems this lack of outdoor leisure time can cause and suggest at least one possible solution.
MODEL ESSAY:
From televisions sets to online streaming, technological developments post-World War have revolutionized how youngsters spend their free time. While in the past they would spend time outdoors playing sports, today they are more likely to be at home gawking at a screen. This trend can lead to a sedentary lifestyle and obesity, though it can be reversed with more parental supervision.
The increase of screen time among children today, along with the corresponding decrease in time spent on outdoor recreational activities, is a significant contributor to becoming less-active and gaining weight. TV and computers, and perhaps to an even larger extent smart phones, promote sedentary behavior as these devices do not require much physical movement beyond blinking and pressing buttons with a finger. This inactivity, in turn, means that children are not burning enough calories on a daily basis. Because eating schedules have not changed much, with many receiving breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily, the body is less able to consume all the food that gets ingested if insufficient exercise takes place. Therefore, the body converts the sugar, carbs, and other parts of the diet into fat, leading to obesity.
While there are many solutions that may be submitted, I think the most basic and practical solution is greater parental control over children's screen time. Children spend the most time at home, especially during the summer months, and since parents are typically the legal guardians of their kids as well, it makes more sense for this to lie in a parent’s domain than a teacher’s. A few simple rules at home can go a long way in changing leisure habits and encouraging a more active lifestyle. Establishing limits on tv or computer time, setting designated hours for phone use, and other measures are some strategies parents can try to start making a difference.
In a word, excessive screen time and the decrease in exercise that results among the youth will invariably contribute to higher obesity rates. Parents could make an effort to put reasonable limits on screen time. This one simple solution, applied sooner rather than later, can lead to dramatic changes in behavior.
